  • Local insight and recommendations from around Summerville
  • Important places, tips, and resources featured throughout the guide
  • Practical advice designed to help you plan with confidence
  • Community-focused information beyond generic tourist lists

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you step away from the big-box aisles and into the workspaces of Summerville’s creative community. While our downtown boutiques offer plenty of charm, the real heartbeat of the Flowertown can be found in the studios, the workshops, and the quiet corners where raw materials: clay, botanicals, wood, and paint: are transformed into something personal.

Supporting local creativity goes far beyond the storefront. It’s about the person who spent hours perfecting a glaze, the entrepreneur who sources sustainable ingredients for a skincare line, and the artists who teach us how to see our town in a different light.

Welcome to the first edition of Meet the Makers, our new monthly series where we pull back the curtain on the talented hands that shape Summerville.

Maker of the Month: Motherland Essentials

If you’ve ever caught a scent of lavender, lemongrass, or charcoal while walking through a local market, there’s a good chance you were trailing behind someone who just visited Motherland Essentials.

Founded by Andrea Davis, Motherland Essentials is more than just a skincare brand; it’s a masterclass in intentionality. Andrea started her journey out of a personal need for natural, accessible products for her family. Today, it has grown into a beloved Summerville staple known for its cold-pressed soaps, whipped body butters, and botanical bath soaks.

What makes Andrea’s work stand out is the balance of science and soul. Every bar of soap is a miniature work of art, featuring swirling natural pigments and textures that feel like a luxury spa experience in your own bathroom. Andrea is a regular fixture in the local business community, often sharing her knowledge and advocating for sustainable, plant-based self-care.

The Creative Core: Public Works Art Center

You can’t talk about the local maker scene without mentioning the Public Works Art Center (PWAC). Located in the old commissioners of public works building on Richardson Avenue, this hub has become the literal and metaphorical center of Summerville’s art world.

The beauty of PWAC is that it isn’t just a gallery where you look at art from a distance; it’s a living, breathing space. The building houses dozens of studio artists who you can often see at work through their glass-paned doors. Whether it’s oil painting, textile art, or mixed media, the diversity of talent under one roof is staggering.

Beyond the studios, PWAC hosts rotating exhibitions, community classrooms, and a gift shop filled with locally made treasures. It’s the perfect place to start your “Meet the Makers” journey because it offers a snapshot of so many different disciplines in one go.

Shaping the Earth: Pottery in the Flowertown

There is something deeply satisfying about pottery. It is one of the oldest forms of making, and in Summerville, the clay scene is thriving. Two studios, in particular, are leading the charge by offering both beautiful finished pieces and the chance for residents to get their hands dirty.

Iris & Stone Pottery Studio

Located just off 5th North Street, Iris & Stone is a sanctuary for those who want to master the pottery wheel. The studio offers a range of classes, from one-time “try it” sessions to multi-week intensives. The vibe here is supportive and community-focused, making it a favorite for locals looking for a creative outlet after work.

Beyond Handcrafted

Beyond Handcrafted is a unique ceramic social enterprise run by Beyond BASIC Life Skills. This vocational program empowers adults with intellectual disabilities by teaching them the art of pottery. The pieces they create: from textured mugs to seasonal ornaments: are not just beautiful; they represent independence and skill-building. When you buy a piece from Beyond Handcrafted, you are supporting a mission that celebrates the dignity of work and the power of inclusion.

Art in the Open: Sculpture in the South

While many of our makers work inside studios, some of Summerville’s most iconic art is right under your feet: or just around the corner. The Sculpture in the South public art collection is a permanent outdoor gallery that winds through our historic district and parks.

Since 1999, this organization has installed over 25 figurative bronze sculptures throughout the town. From the famous “Hop To It” frog in Azalea Park to the life-sized “Garden” woman in Hutchinson Square, these pieces have become part of the Summerville identity. They remind us that art shouldn’t just be tucked away in museums; it should be part of our daily strolls and community gatherings.

Learning the Craft: Workshops at Bolts & Brews

Maybe you don’t just want to buy local art: you want to be the maker. Summerville has seen a surge in “DIY and Sip” style workshops, and Bolts & Brews Beer Garden has become a surprising but perfect venue for this.

Tucked away on Old Trolley Road, Bolts & Brews regularly hosts local artisans who lead workshops on everything from door hanger painting to plant potting and candle making. There is no better way to spend an afternoon than with a local craft beer in one hand and a paintbrush in the other. It’s low-pressure, high-fun, and a great way to support two local businesses at once.

Where to Find Your Next Favorite Maker

If you want to discover more creators beyond this list, Summerville offers several regular opportunities to shop small and meet the faces behind the brands:

  • Third Thursdays: Every third Thursday of the month, downtown Summerville comes alive with music, food, and an array of local vendors and artisans lining the streets.
  • Summerville Farmers Market: While the produce is the main draw, the market (held Saturday mornings behind Town Hall) is also home to many local makers selling handmade soaps, woodwork, and jewelry.
  • Public Works Art Center Markets: Keep an eye on the PWAC calendar for their seasonal outdoor markets and indoor artisan showcases.

Summerville’s maker community is growing every day. By choosing to shop handmade, you’re not just getting a one-of-a-kind item; you’re investing in the creative soul of our town.
