September in Summerville is that funny little stretch when the calendar says fall, the pumpkins start appearing, and the temperature may have absolutely no intention of cooperating.

But cooler weather or not, September brings one of the busiest stretches of the local calendar.

There’s art to see, markets to wander, a movie under the stars, Sweet Tea Festival week, and even a few last chances to squeeze in something that still feels suspiciously like summer.

So rather than waiting around for sweater weather, here are 10 things worth putting on your Summerville list this September.

1. Catch Hi/Lo Before It Leaves Public Works Art Center

If you’ve been meaning to stop into Public Works Art Center, you’ve only got a few days left to see its current Hi/Lo exhibition.

The exhibition features work by Katelyn Chapman and Andrew Blanchard and runs through Saturday, September 5 in the East and West Galleries.

Public Works is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and gallery admission is free.

That makes this an easy after-lunch or downtown-shopping stop before the exhibit changes over.

Quick Info
When: Through September 5
Where: Public Works Art Center, 135 W. Richardson Ave.
Admission: Free

2. Spend a Saturday Morning at the Summerville Farmers Market

September still gives you several opportunities to spend Saturday morning wandering the Summerville Farmers Market.

The market runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. behind Town Hall at First Citizens Bank and continues through mid-November.

Expect the usual mix of farmers, growers, specialty food vendors and artisans — which means you can leave with vegetables, bread, something sweet, a handmade gift and absolutely no explanation for how all of it ended up in your bag.

Quick Info
When: Saturdays, 8 a.m.–1 p.m.
Where: 218 S. Main Street, behind Town Hall

And yes, arrive early if there’s a particular vendor or item you’ve got your eye on.

We’ve seen how that goes.

3. Get in One More Splash Pad Day at Doty Park

September may technically be the beginning of fall, but Summerville still has some splash-pad weather left.

The First Citizens Splash Pad at Doty Park remains open on its modified schedule through September 30.

During the modified schedule, the splash pad operates:

  • Weekends: 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
  • Monday Tot Time: 10 a.m.–noon
  • Homeschool Wednesdays: 10 a.m.–noon

So if September keeps doing its best July impression, you’ve still got somewhere to take the kids to cool off.

Quick Info
Where: Doty Park, 320 N. Laurel Street
Season ends: September 30

4. Check Out the New Summerville Destination Market

A familiar local market is returning this month with a new name and a new format.

The former Summerville Artisan & Flea Market has been rebranded as the Summerville Destination Market, and its first event under the new name happens Saturday, September 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Nexton Elementary School.

The free outdoor event is being designed as a curated shopping experience with boutique areas for food, fashion and beauty, home goods, makers, family activities and more.

There will also be a Kids Creation Station, Passport Adventure and community silent auction benefiting Nexton Elementary School.

Quick Info
When: Saturday, September 12 • 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
Where: Nexton Elementary School, 200 Scholar Way
Admission: Free

If you like discovering small businesses you haven’t encountered before, this may be one worth wandering.

5. Make a Morning of the Public Works Art Center Block Party

September 12 is going to be a busy Saturday.

Public Works Art Center is bringing back its annual PWAC Block Party from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., shutting down part of West Richardson Avenue between Short Central and Cedar Street for a free arts celebration.

The event is expected to include art stations, carnival games, face painting, treats, performers and other activities, and it also serves as the reception for the annual SPARK Community Exhibition.

Quick Info
When: Saturday, September 12 • 10 a.m.–1 p.m.
Where: Public Works Art Center / West Richardson Avenue
Admission: Free

And because the regular Farmers Market is only about a block away, you could very easily turn this into an entire downtown morning.

Market first. Art second. Lunch afterward.

There are worse plans.

6. Take the Hold My Tea Cocktail Trail

This one is for the adults.

The Hold My Tea Bar Crawl & Sweet Tea Cocktail Contest returns September 14–20, with participating Summerville restaurants and bars creating their own Sweet Tea-inspired cocktails.

Despite the “bar crawl” name, it really works more like a week-long cocktail trail.

Grab a bingo card, visit participating locations, purchase their Sweet Tea cocktails and mark off your stops. Complete seven spots in a row and you can redeem your card for a free Bar Crawl shirt while supplies last.

There are 12 participating locations this year, so you’ve got plenty of options and several days to explore them.

Quick Info
When: September 14–20
Where: Participating Summerville restaurants and bars

Please explore responsibly — nobody said you needed to complete the bingo card in one night.

7. Head Downtown for the Sweetest Third Thursday

September’s Third Thursday happens right in the middle of Sweet Tea Festival week.

On Thursday, September 17 from 5:30–8:30 p.m., Summerville DREAM is billing the event as “The SWEETEST Third Thursday ever!”

Third Thursday already brings people downtown for vendors, shopping, dining, entertainment and an evening around Hutchinson Square and the surrounding streets.

Add the Sweet Tea Festival atmosphere two days before the main event, and this one should feel especially lively.

Quick Info
When: Thursday, September 17 • 5:30–8:30 p.m.
Where: Historic Downtown Summerville

If you like downtown during festival week but prefer something a little less intense than Saturday’s main event, Thursday may be your night.

8. Watch a Movie Under the Stars at Gahagan Park

Bring the lawn chairs and blankets.

The Town of Summerville’s Movies in the Park series returns on Friday, September 18, with a free outdoor screening at Gahagan Park.

The Town currently lists Super Mario Bros. Galaxy as the featured movie. Activities, food vendors and family fun begin around 6 p.m., with the movie starting at sunset.

Quick Info
When: Friday, September 18 • Activities beginning around 6 p.m.
Where: Gahagan Park, 515 W. Boundary Street
Admission: Free

Bring something comfortable to sit on and get there before sunset.

Outdoor movie rules are pretty simple: snacks make everything better.

9. Celebrate Sweet Tea Festival Day

This is the obvious September entry — but it belongs on the list.

The 2026 Sweet Tea Festival takes over Historic Downtown Summerville on Saturday, September 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Expect sweet tea, food, artisan vendors, live entertainment, the Sweetest Kids Zone, the Sweetest Farmers Market and plenty happening throughout downtown. Visitors can also sample tea and help choose the annual Tea of the Year.

Quick Info
When: Saturday, September 19 • 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Where: Historic Downtown Summerville / Hutchinson Square
Admission: Free

We already have a full updated Sweet Tea Festival guide with the bar crawl, road closures, Kids Zone and other details, so we won’t repeat all of that here.

Just know this:

September 19 is probably not the day to casually drive through downtown and wonder why there are people everywhere.

Plan ahead.

10. Give Back With a Morning at Jessen Boat Landing

September doesn’t have to be all eating, shopping and festivals.

On Saturday, September 19 from 9–11 a.m., Summerville Parks & Recreation is participating in the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Beach and River Sweep with a volunteer cleanup at Herbert H. Jessen Boat Landing.

Volunteers will help pick up trash and perform general cleanup around the Ashley River access area. Participants should wear closed-toed shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting dirty.

Quick Info
When: Saturday, September 19 • 9–11 a.m.
Where: Herbert H. Jessen Boat Landing, 4850 Ladson Road

Yes, that’s also Sweet Tea Festival morning.

So for the particularly ambitious among us:

Clean up the river in the morning.

Then go reward yourself with Sweet Tea Festival.

September Is a Pretty Good Month to Explore Summerville

You could easily fill every weekend this month without going very far.

Art.

Markets.

Local businesses.

Outdoor movies.

Community events.

A little volunteering.

And an entire week devoted to the beverage Summerville once made 2,524 gallons of at one time, because apparently moderation was never part of the plan.

September may not bring sweater weather immediately, but it definitely brings plenty of reasons to get out of the house.

Pick a couple of things from the list, try somewhere new while you’re out, and make a little more of your month local.
