Take In Downtown: Hutchinson Square
Sometimes you don’t need another activity.
Sometimes sitting in the middle of town and watching Summerville happen around you is enough.
Hutchinson Square has been one of Summerville’s gathering places for generations. Today it sits at the center of downtown life, surrounded by local businesses and serving as a backdrop for festivals, live music, community events and plenty of ordinary afternoons under the trees.
Take a lap around the square.
Look at the buildings.
Sit by the fountain.

Find Some Green Space: Azalea Park
If you want a little more green space, head toward Azalea Park.
The park stretches along South Main Street with winding paths, gardens, ponds, sculptures, gazebos and plenty of places to slow down for a while.
It’s easy to associate Azalea Park with spring blooms and some of Summerville’s biggest events, but you don’t need a festival happening to enjoy it.
Sometimes it’s simply a good place to walk.

Make Something Your Own: PepperJack Pottery
Now let’s actually do something.
PepperJack Pottery on Old Trolley Road is a paint-your-own pottery studio where you choose a ceramic piece, pick your colors and make something of your own.
No artistic credentials required.
That’s part of the fun.
Go with the kids. Take a friend. Make it a date. Or sit down by yourself and discover that apparently you have very strong opinions about what color a ceramic frog should be.

Try a Little Competition: Lumber Jill’s Axe Throwing Lounge
Maybe pottery is too peaceful.

If this is an adults-only version of your local day, finish downtown at The Azalea Bar & Garden.
The Cedar Street spot combines craft cocktails, wine, local beer and Southern-inspired food with a tucked-away garden atmosphere that feels a little removed from everything happening outside.

It works especially well when you’re not looking for another big activity.
Just somewhere to sit, have a drink and talk about which part of the day you’re definitely doing again.

There’s no checklist for becoming a Summerville local.
