A Lowcountry Homeowner’s Guide to Panel Upgrades, Capacity & Warning Signs

Your home probably uses more electricity today than it did when it was built.
Maybe you added another refrigerator in the garage.
Maybe there’s a home office now.
Maybe you’ve installed a new HVAC system, added a hot tub, started thinking about an EV charger, or you’re planning a renovation.
Individually, none of those things may seem like a big deal.
But together, they can put a lot more demand on your home’s electrical system than it was originally designed to handle.
And at the center of all of it is your electrical panel.
For many homeowners, the panel is something you only think about when a breaker trips.
But it plays a much bigger role than that.
It is the point where electricity enters your home, gets distributed to individual circuits, and is managed in a way that is supposed to keep your home and the people in it safe.
So how do you know whether your panel is still doing its job — or whether your home may be outgrowing it?
First: What Does Your Electrical Panel Actually Do?
Your electrical panel is essentially the control center for your home’s electrical system.
Electricity enters the panel from the utility service and is divided among the circuits that power your lights, outlets, appliances, HVAC equipment and other electrical loads.
Each circuit is protected by a breaker designed to shut off power when something goes wrong.
That could be an overload, a short circuit or another unsafe condition.
When a breaker trips, it is not simply being annoying.
It is responding to something.
The bigger question is whether the problem is isolated to one circuit — or whether your home’s electrical needs are beginning to exceed what the system was designed to support.
100-Amp vs. 200-Amp Service
One of the first numbers homeowners hear when talking about electrical capacity is the amperage of the service.
Older homes may have 100-amp service, while many newer homes use 200-amp service.
A larger service can support more electrical demand, but the number by itself does not tell you everything.
A 200-amp panel does not automatically mean you have unlimited room for new circuits or equipment.
Likewise, a 100-amp service does not automatically mean the entire system must be replaced.
What matters is the actual electrical load on the home, the condition of the equipment, how the circuits are configured, and what you plan to add in the future.
That is why a proper electrical evaluation is more useful than simply looking at the number printed on the panel.
Signs Your Electrical System May Be Struggling
Some warning signs are obvious. Others are easy to dismiss because they happen slowly or only occasionally.
Pay attention if you notice things like:
- Breakers that trip repeatedly
- Lights that flicker or dim when appliances turn on
- Buzzing or humming from the panel
- Breakers or panel components that feel unusually warm
- Burning smells near the panel or electrical equipment
- Discoloration, rust or visible damage
- A lack of available breaker space
- Extension cords or power strips being used as permanent solutions
- Major appliances causing noticeable changes in lights or other equipment
- Electrical issues appearing after adding new equipment or appliances
A single tripped breaker does not necessarily mean you need a new panel. Repeated problems are different.
Burning smells, visible damage, heat, sparking or buzzing should be taken seriously. If you notice those, stop troubleshooting and have a licensed electrician inspect the system.
An Empty Breaker Slot Doesn’t Always Mean You Have Capacity
This is one of the easiest misconceptions to have.
You open the panel.
There are a couple of empty spaces.
So there must be room for that EV charger, hot tub or workshop circuit.
Not necessarily.
Available physical space in the panel and available electrical capacity are two different things.
The panel may have an open slot while the home’s electrical load is already approaching what the service can safely support.
That is why electricians perform load calculations when evaluating major additions.
They are looking at the home as a system — not just counting empty breaker spaces.
Modern Homes Keep Asking for More Power
Think about how many electrical devices have become normal parts of everyday life.
- Multiple televisions
- Computers and gaming systems
- Kitchen appliances
- HVAC equipment
- Garage refrigerators and freezers
- Outdoor kitchens
- Pool pumps and hot tubs
- Workshop equipment
- Home offices
- Smart-home systems
- Electric vehicles
Even if your home was perfectly adequate when it was built, your electrical needs may have changed substantially since then.
That does not mean every new appliance requires a panel upgrade.
But larger additions are a good reason to have the existing system evaluated.
Planning an EV Charger?
An EV charger can represent a significant new electrical load.
Depending on the charger, vehicle and installation, it may require a dedicated 240-volt circuit.
Before installing one, an electrician should determine whether the existing panel and electrical service can safely support the additional demand.
In some homes, there may already be sufficient capacity.
In others, an upgrade or other electrical work may be needed first.
The important part is finding that out before the equipment is installed.
Adding a Pool, Hot Tub or Outdoor Living Space?
Outdoor electrical projects can add more demand than homeowners sometimes realize.
A pool may involve pumps, lighting, heaters and other equipment.
A hot tub is another substantial electrical load.
Outdoor kitchens, workshops and detached structures may also require dedicated circuits or even separate panels.
These projects also introduce additional safety considerations because electricity is being used around water or exposed outdoor environments.
Planning the electrical side early can prevent surprises later in the project.
What About a Generator?
Backup power is another reason your electrical panel matters.
Whether you are installing a portable-generator connection or a standby generator, the system needs to safely transfer power without creating dangerous conditions for your home or utility workers.
Your electrical panel, transfer equipment and service capacity all play a role in that setup.
If backup power is part of your hurricane or outage planning, the panel should be part of the conversation.
Panel Replacement vs. Service Upgrade
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they are not always the same thing.
A panel replacement generally involves replacing the electrical panel itself.
A service upgrade may involve increasing the amount of electrical service available to the home and can require additional work involving the meter, service entrance equipment and utility connection.
A homeowner might need one without necessarily needing the other.
That is another reason an inspection and load evaluation are useful before deciding what work is required.
Older Homes Deserve a Closer Look
Summerville has homes spanning many decades of construction.
Some older electrical systems have been updated over time.
Others may have had additions, renovations and equipment added without the entire system being evaluated together.
If you own an older home — especially one that has undergone several renovations — it can be worth having the electrical system reviewed before adding another major load.
The goal is not automatically to replace everything that is old.
It is to understand what you actually have and whether it still matches how the home is being used today.
Before a Major Renovation, Ask About the Electrical Load
Homeowners often think about electrical work after the renovation plans are already finished.
It is usually better to bring it into the conversation earlier.
A kitchen remodel may mean additional appliances.
A room addition means more lighting, outlets and HVAC load.
A converted garage or workshop may introduce equipment the original circuit was never intended to support.
Planning the electrical requirements before construction begins can make the project smoother and reduce the chances of discovering a capacity problem halfway through.
What Happens During an Electrical Panel Evaluation?
An electrician may look at several things, including:
- The size of the electrical service
- The condition and age of the panel
- Existing circuits and breaker configuration
- Current electrical loads
- Available panel space
- Signs of overheating, corrosion or damage
- Planned future electrical additions
- Whether existing equipment meets current safety requirements
They may also perform a load calculation to estimate how much electrical demand the home is placing — or will place — on the system.
The goal should be to determine what the home actually needs rather than assuming the most expensive solution is automatically the right one.
Do I Need My Panel Checked?
You may want to consider an electrical evaluation if:
- You are adding an EV charger.
- You are installing a hot tub, pool or major outdoor electrical equipment.
- You are planning a large renovation or addition.
- You are adding a generator or backup-power system.
- Your breakers trip repeatedly.
- Your lights regularly dim or flicker when equipment turns on.
- Your panel has little or no remaining space.
- Your home has had multiple additions or renovations over the years.
- You are unsure how old the panel is or what capacity your home has.
- You notice heat, buzzing, burning smells, corrosion or visible damage.
That last group is different from routine planning.
If you see or smell signs that suggest overheating or electrical damage, do not wait for the next renovation to have it checked.
More Power Isn’t Always the Answer
A larger electrical service can be useful when a home genuinely needs more capacity.
But upgrading simply because “200 amps sounds better” is not the goal.
The goal is having an electrical system that safely supports the way you use your home.
Sometimes that means upgrading the panel or electrical service.
Sometimes the existing system is perfectly capable of supporting the project.
And sometimes another issue is causing the symptoms entirely.
A professional evaluation can help separate those situations.
Plan for the Home You’re Building Toward
Electrical capacity is easy to ignore because most of it is hidden behind walls.
Until something trips.
Or flickers.
Or you discover that the new equipment you already bought requires more power than expected.
If you know an EV, pool, hot tub, generator, renovation or major appliance upgrade is somewhere in your future, it is worth understanding your electrical system before the project begins.
Your panel does not need to be the newest or biggest one available.
It needs to be safe, properly maintained and capable of supporting the home you actually live in.
