Ask someone where Carnes Crossroads is, and you might get two very different answers.

“Summerville.”

“No, that’s Goose Creek!”

And just like that, you’ve started another Lowcountry geography debate. 😄

Here’s the funny thing: depending on what you’re asking, both answers make sense.

Carnes Crossroads is within the City of Goose Creek, but many of its homes and businesses use Summerville mailing addresses. Yes, you can live in Goose Creek, receive mail addressed to Summerville, and confuse somebody who’s trying to figure out where to meet you for lunch.

But while everybody debates which city gets to claim it, something more interesting has been happening here.

Restaurants are opening. Local businesses are finding customers. Community gathering spaces are taking shape. And there’s even a working farm in the neighborhood.

So rather than argue about the address, let’s explore Carnes Crossroads and the surrounding North Main Street corridor.

First, Let’s Settle the Address Debate

Carnes Crossroads sits near the intersection of Highway 17A and Highway 176 in Berkeley County. The City of Goose Creek annexed the property in 2006, before much of today’s development took shape.

Since then, the master-planned community has continued growing, with more homes, businesses, and amenities arriving along the way.

But the Summerville mailing addresses remain a source of confusion. The important distinction is that a postal city doesn’t necessarily determine municipal boundaries.

For this guide, we’re including Carnes Crossroads itself and nearby businesses along North Main Street. Not every stop is technically inside the residential development, but they’re all part of the area’s growing collection of places to visit.

Goose Creek or Summerville?

Municipal boundaries say Goose Creek. Many mailing addresses say Summerville, SC 29486. Both can be correct. And around here, supporting local doesn’t stop at a city-limit sign.

Remember Mount Carnes?

Before some of the new shopping centers and storefronts took shape, Carnes Crossroads had a landmark of a very different kind.

A giant pile of dirt.

During construction near the Publix development, an enormous mound of earth became something of a neighborhood celebrity. Locals affectionately dubbed it Mount Carnes.

The unofficial mountain even inspired a City of Goose Creek April Fools’ joke about the supposed “highest peak in the Lowcountry.”

Forget the mountains of North Carolina. For a while, Carnes Crossroads had its own peak right here in Berkeley County. 😄

Mount Carnes, the legendary former “peak” of Carnes Crossroads, as seen on Google Maps.

Of course, Mount Carnes wasn’t a hiking destination. It was an active construction area, not a public recreational trail.

The mound is gone now, but its legend lives on. It’s a funny little piece of neighborhood history—and a reminder of how quickly this part of the Lowcountry has changed.

A Neighborhood With Its Own Working Farm

One of the most interesting features of Carnes Crossroads isn’t a restaurant or shopping center.

It’s a farm.

The community celebrated the opening of its agrihood amenities in May 2025. An agrihood combines residential living with agriculture, making a working farm part of the neighborhood experience.

At Carnes Crossroads, that includes growing areas, educational gardens, farm-share opportunities for residents, and a public-facing Farm Store with seasonal produce and locally sourced products.

And here’s the good news: you don’t have to live in Carnes Crossroads to shop at the Farm Store. Certain garden and harvesting activities, however, are resident-focused.

The community has also hosted farmers markets and neighborhood activities, giving local growers, makers, and small businesses opportunities to connect with customers.

Rooftop Drinks and a Neighborhood Gathering Place

There’s something appealing about having a neighborhood place where you can meet friends, grab a bite, and spend a little time outside.

Neighborhood Tap House adds a rooftop gastropub atmosphere to the Carnes area, with rotating taps and a menu featuring smoked wings, burgers, sandwiches, and other casual favorites.

The upstairs space gives it a different feel from many surrounding restaurants. The location has also hosted live music, trivia, and other social events.

As the commercial district continues to grow, gathering places like this help turn a collection of storefronts into somewhere people want to spend time.

Uptown Carnes: Building a Neighborhood Destination

The next chapter of Carnes Crossroads is taking shape at Uptown.

This growing mixed-use district is bringing restaurants, retail, services, and public gathering spaces closer to surrounding neighborhoods.

But the idea is bigger than simply filling storefronts.

Uptown is becoming a place where residents can meet, attend events, grab a meal, and spend time together without leaving their part of town.

The City of Goose Creek has used the Uptown Lawn for community activities and seasonal celebrations, adding another gathering place for families and neighbors.

Duck Donuts has also been associated with the development, bringing its made-to-order donut concept to the area’s growing food scene. Confirm its current opening status before making a special trip.

Yummy Bowl

Another recent arrival, Yummy Bowl opened in September 2026, bringing Mongolian-style stir-fry and sushi to the corridor.

And that’s only part of what’s happening.

Beyond restaurants, the area is welcoming wellness businesses, services, retail spaces, and amenities that support the growing community.

The Real Story Isn’t Goose Creek Versus Summerville

Here’s what makes Carnes Crossroads interesting.

It’s a neighborhood that’s still growing into its identity.

The farm gives it something distinctive. The restaurants offer more choices close to home. The new commercial districts create places to gather. And community events bring people together beyond their own streets and subdivisions.

There’s plenty more to discover, and the list will keep changing as new businesses open.

Yes, Carnes Crossroads is in Goose Creek.

Yes, many of its mailing addresses say Summerville.

And yes, for a little while, it even had its own mountain. 😄

But the best part of the neighborhood isn’t which city gets to claim it.

It’s the people, businesses, and community spaces helping it grow.

Because supporting local doesn’t stop at a city-limit sign.
