A Brief History of Dorchester County
Although Dorchester County was officially established in 1897, its history stretches back to the colonial Lowcountry. In 1696, settlers from Dorchester, Massachusetts, established a community along the Ashley River. The settlement became an important part of the region's early history.
The colonial town later became associated with the fortifications at Fort Dorchester and the American Revolution. The original settlement eventually declined, but its name and historic landmarks endured.
In 1897, South Carolina established Dorchester County from portions of Berkeley and Colleton counties, with St. George serving as the county seat. Today, the county includes growing communities such as Summerville, alongside historic towns, rural landscapes, and important Lowcountry waterways.
Settlers from Massachusetts establish a community along the Ashley River.
Construction begins on a colonial tabby fort.
The Dorchester area experiences military activity during the Revolution.
Dorchester County is formed from portions of Berkeley and Colleton counties.
The Colonial Dorchester site comes under state park protection.
The U.S. Census counts 161,540 Dorchester County residents.
