Change is in the air, Summerville! If you’ve spent any time at Doty Park lately, you know it’s the heartbeat of our community. From tennis matches to afternoon strolls, it’s a staple for local families. But starting this Friday, February 27th, the playground area is going to look a little different.
We’re officially announcing that the Doty Park Playground will be CLOSED for a major renovation. While we’re sad to see the slides go dark for a few weeks, the reason behind it is something we can all get behind: a total "glow-up" to create a brand-new, fully inclusive playground that everyone in our community can enjoy.
Whether you’ve got toddlers finding their feet or bigger kids who think they’re American Ninja Warriors, this upgrade is designed for you. Here’s everything you need to know about the closure, the exciting things coming to Doty, and: most importantly: where you can take the kids to burn off that extra energy in the meantime.
Why the Closure? The Vision for an Inclusive Doty Park
For a long time, the Town of Summerville has been working toward making our public spaces more accessible. The current renovation project at 320 N. Laurel St. isn't just a simple coat of paint. With a budget not to exceed $500,000: partially funded by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development Community Development Block Grant (CDBG): this is a high-level overhaul.
What does that mean for our kiddos?
- New Equipment: The old structures are being removed to make way for state-of-the-art playground equipment specifically designed for ages 5-12.
- Better Surfacing: Say goodbye to those pesky wood chips (engineered wood fiber) that always seem to find their way into everyone's shoes. The new park will feature artificial turf or "poured-in-place" safety surfacing. This is a game-changer for parents pushing strollers or children using mobility devices.
- ADA Compliance: A major goal of this project is to ensure the park meets current Federal CPSC, ASTM, IPEMA, and ADA standards. This includes converting one of the entrances to be fully accessible.
- Shade and Comfort: The project also includes drainage improvements and optional shade structures to keep those hot South Carolina summer days a bit more bearable.
When Will it Re-Open?
Patience is a virtue, but we know how hard it is to tell a five-year-old that their favorite swing set is "on vacation." The good news is that the wait won't be long! The town currently anticipates re-opening the Doty Park Playground later this spring. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for perfect construction weather so we can celebrate the grand opening just in time for the warm-weather peak.
In the meantime, don't let the closure get you down. Summerville is packed with incredible parks that are just a short drive away. This is the perfect opportunity to explore a new neighborhood and find a new favorite "Things to do in Summerville SC" spot.
Your Guide to Alternative Playgrounds in Summerville
Just because Doty is taking a nap doesn't mean playtime is canceled. Here are five amazing alternatives to keep on your radar over the next few weeks:
1. Gahagan Park Playground
If you haven’t spent an afternoon at Gahagan Park Summerville, you are missing out. Known for its massive, plantation-style wooden playground (often called "The Big Toy"), this park is a dream for kids who love to climb, hide, and explore. It’s located just a few minutes from the heart of downtown and offers plenty of space for parents to sit in the shade while the kids run wild.
- Location: 184 W. Boundary St.
- Best For: Kids who love a "fort-like" atmosphere and families who want a lot of space.
2. Saul Alexander Park Playground
Located right next to the Dorchester County Library, this is the perfect spot for a "Books and Bounds" afternoon. The playground is fenced-in, which is a massive win for parents of "runners." It’s a bit smaller than Gahagan, but it’s beautifully maintained and offers a great variety of equipment.
- Location: 615 S. Laurel St.
- Best For: Younger children and parents who want a fenced-in, secure environment.
3. Wassamassaw Park Playground
Looking for a bit more nature? Wassamassaw is a hidden gem. It’s tucked away in a quiet neighborhood and features a great playground surrounded by mature trees. It also has a disc golf course and walking trails if you want to turn playground time into a full-family nature walk.
- Location: 615 Wassamassaw Rd.
- Best For: Families looking for a quieter, more shaded experience.
4. Huger Park Playground
Huger Park is a classic neighborhood park. It’s simple, clean, and usually not as crowded as the larger destination parks. If you’re looking for a quick stop to let the kids jump around for 30 minutes before dinner, this is your spot.
- Location: 615 W. Richardson Ave.
- Best For: A quick, local play session without the crowds.
5. Shepard Park Playground
Tucked away on Parkwood Dr., Shepard Park is another fantastic neighborhood option. It offers a nice mix of open green space and play structures. It’s a great place to bring a picnic blanket and just enjoy the Lowcountry breeze.
- Location: 200 Parkwood Dr.
- Best For: A peaceful afternoon picnic and low-key play.
Making a Day of It: More Things to Do in Summerville SC
Since you’re already out exploring different parks, why not make a full day of it? Summerville has so much to offer families during the spring season.
If you're visiting Saul Alexander Park, pop over to the Public Works Art Center to see the latest exhibitions. It’s a great way to sneak a little culture into your "play day."
And let’s be real: nothing follows a playground session better than a sweet treat. If you find yourself downtown after a trip to Doty's neighboring parks, you have to check out Swank Desserts. Their cupcakes and treats are the perfect reward for a day well-played.
If you’re a history buff or just want a scenic walk, you can also take a mini-tour of Summerville's historic homes. The Flowertown area is absolutely stunning this time of year as the azaleas start to think about blooming.
