Santa may be trading snow boots for sunglasses, but the holiday spirit is still coming to Downtown Summerville.
Summerville DREAM’s July Third Thursday will bring Christmas in July to downtown on Thursday, July 16, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The evening will feature a holiday-themed scavenger hunt, participating businesses throughout downtown, and a chance to win a prize basket.
The celebration also launches a three-day Christmas in July Sidewalk Sale, running July 16–18, giving shoppers even more time to browse local stores, discover special finds, and support Downtown Summerville businesses.
Christmas Cheer in the Middle of Summer
Christmas in July combines familiar holiday traditions with the atmosphere of a summer evening downtown. Exploring these streets is the best way to soak in the character of historic Summerville, where the architecture and community spirit have remained a constant for generations.
Instead of heavy coats and hot cocoa, visitors can expect palm trees, warm weather, local shopping, and plenty of festive surprises. It is a chance to enjoy the fun of the holiday season without waiting until December—and to spend an evening exploring the businesses that help make Downtown Summerville special.
Third Thursday runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., making it easy to stop downtown after work, enjoy dinner, browse the shops, and take part in the scavenger hunt.
Join the Christmas in July Scavenger Hunt
The scavenger hunt adds an interactive—and educational—element to the evening.
Participants will search for holiday-themed items at participating businesses and vendors throughout downtown. At each stop, visitors can collect a signature and scan a QR code to learn the story behind the holiday tradition represented there.
The hunt includes symbols and traditions from different cultures and celebrations, such as:
- A menorah
- A poinsettia
- An Advent wreath
- A kikombe cha umoja, or unity cup
- La Befana
- A Chinese Christmas display
After completing the hunt, participants will be entered for a chance to win a prize basket.
It is a fun way for families, friends, and visitors to explore downtown while learning a little more about how different communities celebrate during the holiday season.
How to Take Part
When you arrive downtown, look for information from Summerville DREAM and participating businesses about where to pick up or access the scavenger-hunt list.
Then:
- Visit the participating stops.
- Find the featured holiday item.
- Scan the QR code to hear or read its story.
- Collect a signature from the business or vendor.
- Follow the instructions to submit your completed hunt and enter the prize drawing.
Because the activity takes place throughout downtown, comfortable shoes are a good idea, along with a charged phone for scanning the QR codes.
